Weber, Dirks lose in Match Play quarterfinals
Joe Weber and Josh Dirks, a pair of members from the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, lost their quarterfinal match in the annual Wisconsin State Golf Association Bestball (four-ball) Championship at The Legend at Merrill Hills in Waukesha recently.
Weber, a dentist from Onalaska, won the La Crosse County Amateur Golf Championships the past two years, and La Crosse's Dirks, a perennial contender for the County Am title, won their first two matches before losing to Brian Thiet of Shorewood and Steve Sass of Mequon 1-up.
Weber and Dirks finished fifth in the opening stroke play competition on Thursday with a 9-under 67-67-134.
Other La Crosse area golfers didn't fare as well.
James DeBoer of La Crosse and his partner, Sam Nevins of Edgerton, missed the cut with a 72-78-150 in the stroke play competition on Thursday. Also missing the cut were the father-son team of Jim and Ben Socha from Onalaska. They finished with 78-75-153.
